Wealth, attainment of

There's a commercial playing currently on our local crying-admin radio station where a warm and effusive voice touts a seminar at the mall Holiday Inn on topics relating to personal finance and how to make the most of your ducats. With a free gift (I have plenty of ballpoints, thanks)!

What slays me are the little nibbles of the knowledge that can be gained at this shaminar, my very favorite being: "Saving money won't make you rich!"

Because, things being the way they are, people should still be learning tricks to become Housewives of Tackytown-style RICH! As opposed to just, say, eating and paying one's bills.

This is an old trope from the "happiness is a destination" school and I'm jazzed that it still survives!

Not saying one should keep cash in a Medaglia d'Oro can, either. One can never beat the gold standard set by Hetty Green, once featured in Ripley's as the "greatest miser of all time":

Her frugality extended to family life. Her son Ned broke
his leg as a child, and Hetty tried to have him admitted in a hospital charity
ward. When she was recognized, she stormed away vowing to treat the wounds
herself. The leg contracted gangrene and had to be amputated
he ended up with a cork prosthesis.

I mean, doesn't she look happy, though?

Nick's Picks 2/3/2009

How come no one has opened a 24-hour Chinese resturant?...Don't those long-haired football players worry about getting their locks stepped on?...Taco Bell started its long decline into full suckitude when they did away with green sauce...if it's pretentious to intend the next month repairing gaps in my Nabokov reading, then tag! I'm it...hard to believe, but golden raisins go great with halibut...it takes some doing to get through a Kinks box set...some people are passionate about dogs, but my money's on cats...if next Superbowl
you intend to skip out on watching and want instead to watch a movie from 1995 with Danny "Machete" Trejo in the cast, make sure it's Michael Mann's Heat...

And, if, heaven forfend, la famille Newhouse does shut down the New Yorker?

Who will give safe harbor to all the cartoonists, er, drawing makers?, etc?

How many thoughtpieces will be launched on topic of "lifespan of Updike nearly parallels lifespan of the New Yorker?"

Where will I go for all my poke boat needs, and all the other bits and bobs advertised in those tiny ads in the back (this is where I first heard of Blenheim ginger ale, for cry yi!)?

And, most importantly, what would become of Anthony Lane?

He's the very last rampart against the barbarians out there!

And, for the love of Pete, let the magazine go on until he has enough pieces for a sequel to Nobody's Perfect!

I actually think the best case scenario, if closure is unavoidable, would be to have huge jumbotrons, telescreenlike in their unavoidability, anywhere you look, with Anthony Lane just talking and saying witty things all the time. I mean, I'd like it.

Cut Off Your Hands

If I were in high school, I would really stoked about this record, touched as it was by the mighty production hand of the lovely Bernard Butler.

As it is, I only eternally walk the high school halls of my mind, so I don't feel super-strong about this LP, but it's good. And that's only five songs in, where, amidst the clatter of faux-Smiths instruments the singer bleats "I woke up drunk again this afternoon..." Cute!

Beats, I dunno, Bloc Party.

Spring (ish)

Just like one of those asshole kids I've excoriated previously, I walked around yesterday with no coat!

The sun was out, the mounds of dirty snow were melting everywhere and I decided that it was warm enough to doff my peacoat and walk around in only a shirt, sweater and scarf.

Then, this morning, I saw a commercial or maybe a local news story (I was barely alive), with our local buses doing something or other - BUT the file footage was shot in the first days of spring: the grass was fluorescent and the trees were mistily aleaf with fresh buds. It was then I realized, okay - I heart the snow, but am also grateful that the winter won't last forever, and am indeed looking forward to being actively physically tired of the ice and crap. Like, I wanna groan when the weather calls for more sleet.

That way, when spring does arrive (and it will), I will be all the more grateful!

New thing! Nick Eddy Internet Haha's!

Random crap, culled from the internet by me, run through a stringent "is it funny?" process and then posted for all your reblogging needs.

And, as I have no inclination to follow Digg or Fark or any of that, the cyber nicknack's here posted may already be played out, tired or well and truly over - I would not have a clue! YES!

Here's one:

Har!

Best thing ever, by some measure

Not my Biscuit, of course, but amazingly fantastic ne'er the less!
