Oh, god, THAT again

"Huh?," I thought yesterday when I saw a sticker on a truck driven by a lady who looked like she would have led a letter-writing campaign to save the Linda Hamilton/Ron Perlman series Beauty and the Beast from the fires of cancellation. Was this performance art? Forks? What?

Turns out it was a Twilight tie-in!

Oh, well, never mind. I'm off to design a BURPELSON AIRFORCE BASE sticker.

Yoko? Really?

I was at the local art museum a bit back...before the baby came? Must have been. Anyway, looking through their book offerings I thought I would buy one of those art museum-y "Art Since 1945" compendiums, just to see who had fallen in and out of favor in art-book approval standings in the years since I used to buy these sort of things on family trips to Philadelphia or Toledo or Montreal. Was George Segal passe? Were Mel Ramos's "naked cheesecake girl on a rhino" paintings deemed blasphemous in the post-PC world? Blah, blah, blah...

Well, knock me over with a feather, but time has indeed made Yoko Ono (she was married to Brian Jones's brother or something) a true artiste. Which we knew: she was art-world famous before she got famous famous. But was surprised to see she was deemed important!

Good for her!

Speaking of Gossip Girl,

I don't care very much about The Fall, right, but, according to Pitchfork's 2.2 review of their newie Ersatz GB, they have a song called "Nate Will Not Return" which "sees how many rhymes [Mark E Smith] can force with the name of the Gossip Girl character."

You remain, of course, stronger and better than me if you don't want to hear that.

"Occupy" movie is cast, apparently - "Zeitgeist defining," says yr mom

Matthew "Rufus Humphrey" Settle as a surly sit-inner!

Probably!

Sorta need

Although Christopher Buckley's review was sorta useless, finding out from it that Kurt Vonnegut's mother killed herself on Mother's Day makes me want to read that new biography.

Letters of EB White

I'm very slowly wending my way through The Letters of EB White. How's that for boring/pretentious/irrelevant? It's great! He's very witty. Some of his essays I have read, he seems sort of smug, but not here thus far. Plus it's interesting to see that there were 400K people unemployed in NYC in 1921. Etc.

But wait - why a picture of John Cheever then? Well, a week or so ago I was trying to find out Stephen King's sobriety date via phone and was lead to a great article somewhere (I've lost the favorite link when I had to clear memory off phone, alas...wait, let me look: http://moreintelligentlife.com/content/tom-shone/when-novelists-sober) which featured JC telling Truman Capote how terrible Smithers was, etc, and was struck by what a great illustration this was...I am paying tribute here by re-posting it with no credit whatsoever (hello, Chris!).

Still no Cheever content, though, you grouse. Okay, then: I will open a sandwich/hoagie "shoppe" where people will still dress like fucking human beings (for once) and sing Dartmouth fight songs and shit - I will call it Cheevesteaks. Mkay?

Sunday sauce this week

No shit, I'm doing the full Sunday Sauce a la Goodfellas (ours will have meatballs and braciole) in time for Sunday football. Very excited about this! The butcher at the grocery even gave me proper butcher's twine to tie up the braciole. This will be sick. If it turns out well, I'ma do it again afore Christmas with double amounts and freeze the extra and just bust it out through the winter.
