Medieval drop-D

Considering anew the idea of shitcanning any and all current rock projects in favor of a lute-based combo with renaissance faire-style percussion, BUT coupled up with LOW frequency blasts of a type the French pioneer in weaponry.

I will call it

BEOWOOFER

In which I solve energy, war, etc

The president said something in his convention acceptance speech that I thought needed to be said and badly: "We need a Manhattan Project for energy." Yay!, said I.

With everything else going on, I expect that this is on the back burner (heh), though I would guess he will come out with a JFK-like challenge to the nation to have every gas-burning car made into some sort of planter by 2018 at his State of the Union address, a la the challenge to get to the moon first in th 1960s.

Well, here is the answer, whipped up quickly but adequately in my precious MS Paint:
See? It's a car, but it has a solar panel on top. So when your car sits all day in the sun, a battery charges and your car runs.
This will solve:
1.) oil crises: lack of reliance on Middle-Eastern oil will get us out of the region, finally, and all the Bible beaters can suck it as some cheesy pockyclips is forestalled for another hunnerd years
2.) all those empty factories the neighborhood kids are smoking salvia in can be converted to factories making solar cars, which everyone will want...I also recommend we hurry and squash oil lobbyists who will dither about in the face of change, thus allowing the Chinese and Indian subcontinent to steal my intricate design and beat us to the punch. The switchover to people giving up their gas hogs will take a few years, by which time improvements will be made to original designs (car cleans up around the house for you, eg) so that pioneering buyers will have impetus to buy newer models. Hey, a car industry! Who'd a thunk?
3) this will put a sock in the environmental people as well, as carbon output will be next to zero with the solar battery that is even now being designed since I started typing this bullet item!
All will once again (?) be well thoughout the world!
Coming Monday: my three-point plan to stop the Kindle! If I remember!

Listening styles II - facing a hard truth, and a mea culpa

Then sometimes I will try to listen to Rock Archival Classics I Should Care About, knowing they are good for me and maybe they will somehow click with me this time - but, with best intentions, I know even while I try to listen to Trout Mask Replica or Metallic K.O. I'd rather be listening to something (anything?) else [or, indeed, Something/Anything]. It's the same sort of wrongheaded good intention as saying "Dammit, I am going to read all of Proust this summer!"

With this is mind, I humbly admit I will likely never make it through the Kinks box set I have tooted various horns about for months.

Oh, I could pretend to, but that would not be fair to any of us.

There were some moments, early on, where I thought "No, I really do care about the Kinks!" But as the grinding Daviesian playlist wore on, and the band, mid-70s, took on the frightening appearance of some proto-Dire Straits, all hope was lost.

Well, not all, I did find the simply fantastic "Shangri-La" out of the whole deal:

So, we here at Nick Eddy Relents apologize for any inconvenience.

Listening styles

Do you have a listening style?

Here are some:

1. Somedays I want a brand new playlist on the iPod knockoff, with "surprises" coming at me. Mix of new and old, some songs that feel good for the time of the year. So then, the playlist can be repeated for a couple of days, until the itch of overfamiliarity takes over...

2. New/whole record day: whole LPs digested and spat out. Sometimes a new record comes out and I need to play it clean into the ground, til it's absorbed. Other times, a quick perusal of tracks and then a cursory dismissal. Other times, a whole "old" favorite hits the spot. Like, wake up needing to hear Imperial Bedroom or Violator...Spilt Milk...

3, Making a mix CD day - I'm having one of these, have just enough new shit and enough desire to hear "And Your Bird Can Sing" that I have assembled a new CD-length playlist. Then at the end of the day I will burn this pup and drive around with it all weekend. Wait, here it is:

Pet Shop Boys - Love, Etc
Gringo Star - All Y'all
Belle and Sebastian - String Bean Jean
Art Brut - Alcoholics Unanimous
Depeche Mode - Wrong
Beatles - And Your Bird Can Sing
Doves - Kingdom of Rust
Fight Like Apes - Lightsaber C-cksucking Blues
The Virgins - She's Expensive
Lily Allen - Chinese
Tahiti 80 - Unpredictable
Lilac Time - Bank Holiday Monday
West End Girls - A Little Black Dress
Morrissey - It's Not Your Birthday Anymore
Blur - Get Out of Cities
Rufus Wainwright - Millbrook
St Vincent - The Strangers
Phoenix - 1901
['wildcattin'' speech from Royal Tenenbaums]
Hot Leg - Cocktails
The Love Language - Two Rabbits
Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
New Order - Here to Stay

So, yeah, that comes out to, what?, 79:24. Looking at it, I'm old and seem to like bands from England. Dumb!

Because I care

YOUR next civil war

No, it won't be between races or the haves and the havenots - it will be between the readers and non-readers. Problem is, the readers will think "surely this can't be happening!" because they falsely presume that people still have some innate sense of right and wrong, while the non- will be utterly ready for anything because they are thoroughly desensitized from Xboxes and the like, and life has no value to them. Plus the non-readers tend to have all the guns.

Good luck to all of you, whichever side you represent.

Even money

Things being the way they are (the repellent Octomom a huge star, etc), I'm giving even money that the Rihanna/Chris Brown "duet" will be a cover of "Love Hurts" - only fresher for today!
