Nick Eddy's Film Forumz Friday

1. just saw a story on Gawker where firemen kept a kid from panicking in a stuck elevator by singing "Let It Go" from Frozen at him/her.  How do all these fireman know this song?  Their kids?  Did anyone even see Frozen?  What IS GOING ON?

2. People say to me constantly "Nick Eddy - what is your day job like?, and I'm ashamed that I'm not doing more so you don't have to work at all!"  Well, thanks - I appreciate the sentiment!  As for my job, it's like this: the Bride and I have a commitment to go see The Grand Budapest Hotel tomorrow.  But if I say I'm going to a movie, I can't say which one here - because no one will know what I'm talking about.  I also can't say that I haven't really cared about old Wes's films since about 3/4ths of the way through The Life Aquatic, because my words would just float away, not comprehended, across limitless expanses of space/time.

If I were to say what I'm going to see, "they" would say, "Oh, is that the new Schwarzegger movie?  My husband wants to see that!" or perhaps "you should see Frozen!"

The Weekend I Saw TWO Movies (and they both had a character named Thor!)

Saw The Avengers in 3D on Saturday, Damsels in Distress on Sunday.  Well-rounded!

Mmm, tessaracty!  Also, ate a whole bag of
Sour Patch Kids.

Shockingly, the Bride did NOT pinch, bite or
otherwise lash out at the WASPy banter.  A miracle!

"Kill Tenace, Anyone?"

Wow, that is indeed the (terrible) working title for my latest never-to-be-written/produced screenplay!

In the grand tradition of my other fab movie ideas (http://nickeddyrelents.blogspot.com/2010/03/three-movie-plots.html ), I was struck over the head with the sudden need to pretend to make a movie when I read this (in that very same book about 70's baseball players discussed the other day):

And so it was back to Cincinnati for Game 6 [of the 1972 World Series],
where - in the lone blow-out of the Series - the Reds hammered Vida Blue and
three other A's pitchers for eight runs and 10 hits, while the A's managed only
one run off Ross Grimsley. After the game it was revealed that local authorities
had arrested a man at Riverfront who had been overheard making threatening
remarks about [A's catcher Gene] Tenace; the 32-year-old Louisville suspect had
a loaded pistol and a bottle of whiskey in his pants when he was arrested. "If
you got to go, Gene," Reggie Jackson joked, "at least it will be on national
television."

Now, I want you to sit still a minute and really try to think of a reason that someone should not make a starkly dramatic (with moments of mordant humor), realistic, meticulously true-to-era feature film about some guy from Louisville in 1972 having a bone to kill fucking Gene Tenace, of all people. What?? You can't think of a reason, is the point.

I mean, the movie could just be the dude's entire day leading up to his arrest, with vintage pickups and stopping to get gas with "What Condition (My Condition Is In)" on the radio in the station and vintage beef jerky wrappers and shit, never mind getting a budget together to rebuild replicas of parts of Riverfront stadium (for this would be a prestige production, flying loftily above mere CGI eye-foolery). Plus the casting of all the various Reds and A's players and Vin Scully and Bowie Kuhn and Kissinger and James Caan and Mick Ronson and everyone else who was around in 1972.

You can go ahead and do this, is the point. You have my permission.

Irked

When you make a prequel, like this new Alien thing or those crappy Star Wars movies, care should be taken to make the special effects and such actually less tech than when the original came out. Y'know?

I watched this Prometheus trailer and the idea that this CGI gizmo is in any way related to the haunted house original of Alien is just crazy.

What someone (you!) should do, right, is a mega-meta movie about a sci-fi society that has undergone some sort of tech downgrade between its prequel and sequel. So, like the characters from the prequel arrive to see the people from the "original" (who are walking around in dusty Chinatown-style film, with "lazers"), leaving time for lots of Charlie Kaufman(sp?)-style hijinx, and everyone spends the entire movie sitting around discussing what could have happened. Sorta Philip K Dick, as well.

I'd like to see that, but then I hate the movies, barring ones I've seen before.
