More music by me you will likely never hear

Got together last night with some doodz to work on a little rock and roll band we wanna call CRUSHER.

Pardon the Bob-esque technique here, but was sitting at my desk knowing rock was at 6pm when I thought "I'll just make a 45 cover and then make the song up that will fit it," since I had not touched a guitar in a lasting way in ages.  Hey, it worked!

Next week: "Rainface" b/w "Partly at My Girl's Insistence."

Obligatory rock post

Yes, we had the debut of West at Ian's wedding on Saturday...I have some video and some more may be out on the youtube by now, but the files are huge and I'm not sure they will load.

ANYway, here is one of those fab/gimmicky shots of event. Chooch sat in on some guitar and percussing.

Rock catch-all

1. REM in Actually Appealing New Album Shock! Really. I don't cringe with embarrassment in the listening. It's like Green and the good tracks from Out of Time had a baby. It almost makes me want to see what I missed on albums like On the Sun and Contract Full-Filler (names approximate). Only almost, though - I could never waste that much time, when I have so much to share with you wonderful people!

2. I have about 50 LPs to check out but haven't the time.

3. I thought I felt all indifferent about the newish Belle and Sebastian record, but suddenly it's all I've listened to in the truck for a week! Even the Norah Jones-equipped track is great, and, in fact, it was stuck in my head all weekend. I also stuck all the bonus tracks (including the mighty "Suicide Girl" -starting to get some feeling back in my wrist after seeing the video) on the end which REALLY makes this pup swing. So, yeah. But then, in my loneliest moments in the dark of night, I have to wonder if my unquenchable need to listen to this is just a subconscious ruse to keep me from getting off my ass, listening to my own dreck and writing some LYRICS for once in my lazy, miserable life? Your call!

4. Okay, I've never cared about Luna and wasn't smart enough for Galaxie 500 back in the olden times. Just not on my radar. HOWever, in the throes of "nothing good streaming on Netflix"-ness Saturday night, curiosity drove us to watch that 13 Most Beautiful: Andy Warhol Screen Tests thing that was mentioned (probably?) on Magnet and Pitchfork for about 11 seconds and was soundtracked by Dean and Britta (see? a point!). What good little songs! The Paul America test with a song called "Teenage Lightning" ("...put your hand down my pants...") was especially scintillating. Also, this would have been an aMAzing thing to watch when I was still on the jazz cigarettes, because I'm sure the confluence of hazy Velvets-lite rock and vintage Warholia would have had the late-20's me dopily reflecting aloud to whomever was unlucky enough to be in the room: "Wow. Dude. Just think, like, the day they shot this, like, Dennis Hopper, probably had lunch at the Russian Tea Room first, and it was raining, then he went in, shot this little movie at the Factory, talked to Billy Name, then came out and the clouds were parting and there was a rainbow...plus that's like ten years before 'landing on fractions, man' and twenty before Frank fucking BOOTH, for god's sake..." or something.

Next project:

You remember Dunt/Gassett Band from last week? Maybe? I'm too lazy to look when it was, so certainly you must be, too.

Anyway, when this current LP project I'm working on is done (and it's getting there, music for seven of eleven tracks written!), my next thing is a Dukes of Stratosphear-alike project of songs that would be done by a band consisting of a stuffed dog and a picture of a drummer smiling radiantly:

So, that's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" nailed down then

Just a reminder: D____ Does D____ Weekend at Canal St this Friday and Saturday. I will be up there with C Wright's Parlor Tricks, Kelley here will be doing a couple with the Motel Beds, etc. That is all on Friday.
There will also be a prize given for worst rendition of "Goldheart Mountain Queen Directory." Probably. But how will "they" choose from the surfeit of candidates?

Meanwhile, in Minnesota:

Hmm...

RLPC, Week 1, part 4

Back in 2005, I and this* junkie friend of mine went to Chicago to see Mike. For some reason we had this stuffed dog with us, and called it "B." Found it Saturday as I was de-crapping the Volvo pre-disposal (more tomorrow on this, gentle reader) and brought to Recording Rooms. Promptly re-christened Dunt. So here we have the Dunt/Gassett Band:

* went with the full Caulfield here. Sorry.

RLPC, Week 1, Part 3

Ian justifies his lunch!

Duke/Dan/Dutch snags some carbs for the first time since his accident!

"Why did this have to happen to me?" ponders an annoyed/bespooked/saddened/put-upon Commandant Derl:

RLPC, Week 1, Part 2

Look! It's one of those uber-hackneyed shots of gear strewn about. All that's missing is Todd Rundgren in cranberry hip-huggers and DICK DENY [an anagram!] on the kick drum.

Rock LP construction week 1, part 1

Here's where all the woodshedding has been taking place...the Alvarez is the one where Morgan and I went in the car with my dad to buy it at Ace and my dad did not know we were high as frig? We also had a plastic beetle with us that made a high-pitched chirping noise, which was unhearable to Don in the face of his howitzer-assisted nerve deafness. Morgan kept saying "It knows! It knows!"

Anyway, that guitar.

Telecaster in purple and white = GO [VAN BUREN] KNIGHTS!

Rumors parsed:

Way back in October or so, I threw down the gauntlet to some friends who were, like me, whining that they were not making music. "What's the point?" we collectively groused. "We're old!" Never mind the simple joys of making some tunes you can actually stand to listen to! Where was the love?

So, we were all gently saddled with the idea that each of us had to have an album done by 1 April!

Well, holidays came and such, everyone sort of remembered about this, but more in a sense of "how's your album coming?" wink wink, I haven't done shit about it, either.

Well, just last Sunday, one of the participants puffed up like a proud penguin and claimed her record was "almost done." ! The temerity! Followthrough! In fact I will suggest to her that she call her record The Temerity of Followthrough!

With gauntlet duly out there, I have made entreaties to kind Rock Friends and we will commence recording a new steaming pile of NickEddyRock on Saturday...once in 1998, Cory and I did 10 songs in a week. Surely, I can have eleven tracks done by one April 1...?

Anyway, there are all sorts rumors out there. Let's squelch/verify:

1. There will likely be a song called "Precious Specimens." TRUE

2. There will be a song called "Where Were You (While I Was Somewhere Not
Giving a Shit About Girl Talk)?" FALSE

3. MC Lyte cameo! FALSE, except
maybe on bass somewhere.

4. The whole thing will be a rock opera with a story line charting the rise
and fall of Jeff "Frugal Gourmet" Smith. FALSE

5. In advance of this ignonimous release, I will find a way to sendspace a
bunch of old crap, such as Mink LPs and the Jet Age LP from 2003, and post links
here. TRUE

6. This album will make your spring/summer, if you have no other
records to listen to/have just gotten out of prison. TRUE

More on this as it develops. Alack.

Over at the Motel Beds's place

Hey! Motel Beds practice!

A blast through "Dammit."

Somewhat Lynchian portrait of Gassett!

Michelle Nosiness

And when Michelle Bodine [doing an O-matic song at aforementioned event] and I finally have our Manic Street Preachers cover band, she can go by the nom de rock "Michelle Nosiness," which is how the autofill on my phone had it as I was excitedly texting news of my proximity to this local legend!

A jam with C Wright's Parlour Tricks

There will be a "D_____ Does D_____" night coming up here at the end of the month (bands covering bands from here is the point) and my old pal C Wright and his band of boogie barons kindly asked if I would want to do a "coupla numbahs" with them. Although said event is NOT taking place in my house (blast!), I said "Sure!"

So last Friday night, I went to the basement where the rock explodes and blasted through a brace of old Mink tunes.

This is going to be on 1/28 at Canal Street...after our mess, the Motel Beds will have Kelley doing a KD6K song. Should be a mild night out!
