SPUG Tour

A buncha local college kids came down to the garden yesterday to hear The SPUG Story.  They were taking a course in urban renewal/sustainability-type stuff.  I answered questions as well as I could and a student even wants to interview me for her paper and take photos of the place.  Who am I, again?

Like locusts of knowledge, they swept down o'er Burns Ave.

Nary a moldering corpse was found this day.

And like a semiannual Comet o' Adorable,
Metroparks Luci makes her second (maybe more?) blog appearance
of the year!!

Extending Your Growing Season event at S.P.U.G.

"Hey, pinhead," you tell me, "help Luci put up those signs!"

Lecture is go!

Note-taking.

A bed cleared for garlic planting.

Garlic is in!

Garden cookout

Well, we had the S.P.U.G. cookout and kindly neighborhood property owner and friend of the garden George made it extra special with a sound guy and his gas grill.  Cool. Weather was insanely great as well.

Hot, hot, hot

No matter where you are, this apocalyptic (I'll not mince words and spare us all the "pre-") heat is just absurd.

And yet - the garden LOVES it.  It's damn near decadent down there!

A couple of shots from yesterday morning at 6:45 or so, temperature approaching 80...

A visit from Mrs Lyons!

Mrs Lyons, a S.P.U.G. participant, happened by Thursday evening to inform me the tank was nearly empty and we had a right nice chat.  She's a major force behind wanting to have a mid-season cookout wherein folks bring dishes featuring food stuffs that they have grown and she makes/brings an ( most likely amazing) array of Persian delicacies.  Working on this.  Stay tuned!

Down at the garden

Freshness reigns!  Some dedicated participants trimmed and swept up, etc.

A quiet Sunday night!  Mind you don't traipse on a corpse!

Some late starts added to make sure every bed gets used - we're gonna
need all the food we can get after that Tom Cruise "rock" movie
causes massive deaths!

This poor participant/bystander can't believe the tank is getting filled!

This guy has been living among the beds and yowling at gardeners, earning
the name "Mouthy!"

Scenes from a community garden cleanup, 3

Zounds! Next year's garlic, a-thriving!

Scenes from a community garden cleanup, 2

Kindly neighbors have been dumping leaves already. Sweet!

Looking east after a good string-trimming. Jack lives in the blue house!

Looking west - lots of lettuce and heartier plants thriving, so I left those. Also pulled carrots!

Good lord, here is a bed that was overgrown because no one planted in it. I pulled all this crapola out by hand, if I do say so myself. Especially lame because trying to wear gloves makes it had to get down to the roots, so I wore none - but had foolishly cut my nails earlier, then played guitar all weekend, so today I have sore fingies!
