See, I had known this 1980 documentary existed for a long, long time when I saw it on the old Hulu Criterion available list. I bided my time: I was sure (and I was right, it turns out) that the California-in-1980 vibe would be just ugly-70's-hangoverish enough to push the Bride into the proverbial slough o' despond. So, when the Bride took off for Virginia this past Saturday night, it was indeed time for the Bun and I to watch a 50 minute documentary solely about garlic. Look! There's 1980 Alice Waters. Look! Gypsies singing in someone's apartment. Look! Gilroy. Needless to say, it was fantastic. My fave part was some guy who looked like any 1980 math teacher talking about peeling garlic, but averring that he doesn't want to sound like a "hippie dipshit." No worries, sir!
