That's a peony. Hydrangeas come later and more of clustered petal flower. I have the same one. It's my favorite because it comes early, even earlier than my lilacs and much earlier than my other peonies, and just screams here comes the flowers.

Or maybe that was just a brain fart and you don't need my botany lesson. ;)

Great work on the community gardens. I just have our little 4x8 box for the kids. But it's coming along and they have fun.
