I ordered something from J Crew (oh, hell, alright, it was some weird red Tretorns I saw some kid wearing in the Austin airport - he had a T magazine button on his lapel, so, if I buy the same shoes, surely I will soon also write for the Times in its final days?) and the purchase showed up on my bank site, but then it said "reversed." The shoes arrived, though. So I got free shoes!
But then I thought: well, wait, what will happen is I will forget about it, get down to very little in my running-around checking account from which this was paid for, and then someone at the bank or at J Crew will notice and then charge me and I will get an overdraft.
I dutifully called J Crew and they said "no, we show it as paid for. But I'll check on it. Thanks for calling - no one ever calls in with something like this!"
And now, two days later, the charge is back and paid for and I can rest easy, for maybe the first and last time in my life.
