Both Wayside and White Flower Farm list an old-fashioned perennial that is an oddity in the plant world. It is Dictamnus, commonly known as the gas plant, which secretes with its fragrance a resinous volatile matter that may be ignited on hot summer nights without damage to the plant [what?]. I seem to remember references to the gas plant in my childhood, though I never saw one growing then, and I daresay my grandmother played this little game. I can hardly wait to grow a gas plant of my own and set off its eerie fires.
Needless to add, I need some of these for the 4th of July, 2013!
