"Don't be an egg!"

I was sort of in on a conversation between an Aussie and a Kiwi and one told the other "Don't be an egg!"

I had to know whether that expression was common in Antipodeal parlance, and it was!

It's an insult about being old, of all things. Says them. Something to do with, when they found the very last dodo egg, the dodo inside was already dead or something...somehow, it has come to mean "you're being an old stick-in-the-mud/fuddy-duddy."

Which is odd, because, colloquially, when I was in high school, to be an egg was a good thing. "She's a total egg..." we would drool. In fact, it worked for girls speaking of boys as well: "He's such an egg..."

In fact, Mike gave all the girlies Egg Hunt tees for Xmas in '86 [$7.00 ppd from Dischord]. Even Kyle ended up with one.

I did not get one. Sigh.
