And when did this start?

Winter weather is back, of course, after there being none for a decade or so...but something I don't remember seeing back in the old days (ask me about our neighbor taking his jeep to Liberal Foods for milk and supplies during the Blizzard of '77...no, ask me!) is this phenom of drivers lifting their wiper blades to an odd, outbound position so they don't freeze in place:


Oh, sure, maybe back in olden times, the blades weren't even designed to do this. But what worries (?) me is that this trend is just more cable TV runoff - like, one person saw it on Mythbusters or some other wundershow and then everyone decided that THEY TOO were so important that they can't be bothered to scrape and defrost like normal Americans!
