Billy Strayhorn


In honor of his hometown being named one of the nation's fastest-dying cities, it's a good time to mention that the writer of the saddest song in the world, "Lotus Blossom," was indeed born in Dayton, OH, home of your humble correspondent. Billy Strayhorn [r] was a colloborator of Duke Ellington for many years and died too young himself in 1967.

The whole Ellington album, And His Mother Called Him Bill, a tribute to his friend, is just beautiful, if not as sad as this song:
