Now IS the the time for your Tears

With Bernard Butler an accredited producer of getting-bigger-all-the-time freshly-minted stars such as Duffy, Black Kids and the very first (and still best) Libertines single "What a Waster," it's increasingly unlikely that there will ever be a second album from the Tears, his reunion-of-sorts with Suede erstwhile compatriot/sparring partner Brett Anderson. Which is a shame, as this was a very good record, that even fans of their first single "Refugees" mostly failed to notice by the time of the LP's release. (2005! Tempus does indeed fugit!)

This record deserves a second listen, with such standouts as the second single "Lovers" where Butler contorts his guitar and Anderson into a framework not dissimilar to his McAlmont and Butler stuff, and "Autograph" which would satisfy anyone hoping for a Smithsian sequel to "Slow Emotion Replay" by The The.

Anderson remains fairly unhinged, claiming in interviews that the simple (dumb) metaphor of the lilting "Refugees" was actually a grand statement, saying one paramour is like "orange chocolate" (thanks!), and having a song with the hackneyed concept title of "Apollo 13" contain lines like "Estuary girl you're not part of my scene/Your feet don't belong in my upholstery" and lead to a chorus conclusion of "Oh like Apollo, like Apollo 13 we'll explode." Will we, really?

PLUS one of the single bsides was called "Song for the Migrant Worker."

Daft/ace!
