Do they still make runaways?
In the classic sense, like in The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler?
In the 1970s, runaways were a seeming scourge of the nation. "Did you hear? Their daughter ran away!" It was the fodder for many an afterschool special and the occasional Emergency! episode, wherein kids escaped from their suburban homes and went to the City where they would quickly overdose on "reds."
And now, I wonder, with all the amber alerts and such, where have all the runaways gone?
I would guess that parents are so messed up on aerosol paint and the like that kids run away all the time, or never come home at all, if they have homes to which to come, and no one notices. Or are there still parents out there who search the night endlessly and fruitlessly?
Weird.
